Mordialloc Beaumaris Conservation League – Minutes – 1st November 1994

Bradshaw Park

The Friends of Bradshaw Park have received no assistance from Mordialloc Council recently. The Superintendent of Parks and Gardens has not attended. The Town Planner has refused to allow a burnoff in order to promote the regeneration of native plants and apparently has no intention of agreeing to a change to the By-Laws through an amendment to allow a burnoff to proceed.

The Agnew Report

Tim Allen of the Coast Care Newsletter, ‘Waves’ has asked Glen to provide an article on his research work.
Glen has sent the Chelsea Conservation Officer, Doug Evans, contamination figures for the Parkdale Reef sedimentation as a contribution to Streamwatch.

The Government’s objective in promoting Streamwatch is to have community volunteers monitor streams at their own expense rather than employ sufficient Environment Protection Authority Officers to check on pollution of local streams and waterways.

PEAC people visited Glen’s home to view slides featuring his underwater research activities.

December 4 is Ocean Care Day

Mordialloc Creek

There is no litter trap at one big drain to prevent litter entering the Main Drain and Mordialloc Creek.

LEAP people are to commence work on the Creek banks to remove boxthorn, gorse, and broom from the northern bank.

The underpass will be constructed under the Nepean Hwy Bridge in the near future. Tenders have been called.

Mentone Lifesaving Club

Refurbishing the toilets at the Lifesaving club will be carried out as part of the construction of the tearooms. The sewage is collected in a tank behind the club house and is then pumped into the main sewage system.

A new stormwater drain is to be built at Mentone Parade. It will cross the beach and will be concealed by a “jetty” type structure extending into the water.

Bradshaw Park

The $3000 grant has now been spent and reports sent to Melbourne Water, City Engineer Mr Tony Rijs and Mr J.Edwards. Photos and a report of the work carried out by the Friends of Bradshaw Park have appeared in the Melbourne Parks and Waterways Newsletter.
New people attended the Spring Planting on the 2nd October and hopefully will continue to assist with the work.
A burn was planned for the north west corner of the park to re-generate vegetation but the Town Planning Department refused to allow the burn to take, place!

The Agnew Report

Glenn has “acquired” a 3 metre fibre glass boat which will help greatly with research work. 3 CD ROMS are providing useful reference material. The dive- gear is undergoing maintenance.
An alert has been put out asking people to watch out for star fish which are multiplying in the Bay. There is a question mark over the artificial tyre “reef” at Carrum since the original amateur fishing body no longer exists.
We are grateful to Glen for continuing to represent MBCL at the PPCC meetings.

Mordialloc Creek / Wetlands

We are awaiting a response to Chris’s letter to the Premier and Liberal politicians regarding the proposed linear wetland along the banks of Mordialloc Creek.

Mentone Lifesaving club / Tearooms / Pier

The Minister for Planning, R. McLellan has approved the construction of tearooms on the top of Mentone lifesaving Club. There is a query about the toilet blocks at this location and along the foreshore. Are they connected to existing sewage or are septic tanks used?

Mordialloc Beaumaris Conservation League – Minutes – 3rd May 1994

Bradshaw Park

$300.00 is left from the Grant. This money must be spent before June, 1994

Braeside Park

An education night will be held May 18th at Braeside to discuss leachates entering the park’s wetlands from the tips. G.Agnew has been invited to speak at this meeting.
The industrial estate to the west of Braeside is proceeding but the River Red Gums will be preserved.

Mordialloc Creek

Letters have been received from the EPA/ Birrell/ Leigh/David May with regard to Glen’s research work. It is obvious that heavy metal levels are high between the Horse Paddock Reef and the beach and at the mouth of Mordialloc Creek. The Melbourne Water’s Environmental Research Vessel has been sampling between Mentone Beach and the Horse Paddock Reef. Significant amounts of red algae are causing concern to the researchers.
This work is part of the Port Phillip Bay Study. The study is also examining the effect on Mordialloc Creek of the imminent diversion of DSWB water to the Carrum Treatment plant. 60% of DSWB water presently flows into Mordialloc Creek.

Carrum / Edithvale / Mordialloc Creek / Wetlands

D.Allen has received a BIOSIS report which analyses the Edithvale Wetlands.

Mordialloc Beaumaris Conservation League – Minutes – 7th December 1993

Bradshaw Park

With the help of the Grant money work is proceeding to gradually remove exotic trees. Council has installed a watering system which makes this task much easier. Friends of Braeside were involved with the Snapper Festival on Sunday November 14th. Plants were sold and the bus tour group were given an insight into the specialised nature of the work involved in maintaining indigenous plants in the park. Mr David Bainbridge and the Friends group are to be congratulated on the excellent work carried out so far.

Braeside Park

The Snapper Festival tour group were given a barbecue luncheon and a guided tour of the park by the rangers on Sunday 14th November. Land to the west of the freeway reservation is to be sold and sub-divided for an industrial estate. The freeway reservation will not be changed despite an undertaking given by Mr Mark Birrel when Shadow Minister for Conservation that this would be done when the Liberal Government was elected.

Mentone Lifesaving Club Extension

Objections have been lodged to the construction of tea rooms on this site because of the possibility of extension of the car park in the future to cater for beachgoers as well as tearoom customers. This will create further pressure on the fragile foreshore environment.

Carpark / Dixon Street Toilet Block

Following an on-site inspection with the City Engineer, 15th December, a compromise decision was reached in which tea-tree would be removed near the toilet block but the banksias and casuarinas would remain. Tea tree along the Beach Road fence would not be removed. The Engineer gave an undertaking that tea tree on the beach /cliff top side of the path would not be clipped to reduce their height.

Mordialloc Beaumaris Conservation League – Minutes – 9th November 1993

The Spunner Pavilion, Mentone

A planning permit has been sought to add a kiosk/tea room to the Mentone Lifesaving Club. This will involve additional parking in Beach Road or in side streets. The “sails” on the upper balcony will be visually intrusive and will be seen as far away as Rickett’s Point. It is understood that residents have lodged objections as well as MBCL and the PPCC.

The Gordes Report / Beaumaris Park

MBCL are still awaiting an answer from Sandringham Natural Environment Group indicating whether they would be willing to co-operatively plan the foreshore from Rickett’s Point to Charman Road, Mordialloc with the City of Mordialloc. C. King will contact the City Engineer to see if they will with hold work in the park until a management plan has been completed.

The Agnew Report

A comprehensive report was presented to the committee outlining the work of Parkdale Research. The report claimed that an artificial reef of car tyres has been built off Carrum. This contravenes Environmental policy for the Bay. A new strain of mussel has been detected in the Bay as a result of ballast release. Glen spoke at one of the Braeside workshops organised by Bay Rescue during October. The workshops were very successful with 60 people in attendance.

Pollution of Mordialloc Creek

Enquiries to the Acting City Engineer about the regularity or otherwise of reports to Council concerning creek water analysis were unsatisfactory. It may be necessary to contact Melbourne Water to see if copies of the latest tests are available.
Scott Seymour of Melbourne Water states that it will require millions of dollars to remedy the problem of leachates from the Clarke Road rubbish tip entering drains in Braeside and then Mordialloc Creek.
